Client: BT Group plc - Monitoring, Alerting and Logging focus

A senior DevOps contractor for BT working across several project teams on monitoring, alerting and logging through Prometheus, AlertManager, Grafana and ELK stack. I drastically improved observability by adding metrics for over 600 cloud and on-prem hosts, numerous applications and Kubernetes clusters, as well as creating a variety of bespoke dashboards and alerts. I architected and deployed global ELK stack, consolidating multiple individual poorly managed clusters. I automated various manual processes and deployments via Gitlab pipelines, Python and bash scripts. I am heavily involved in failover strategy and recovery processes for the tribe and developed the on-call practices via introduction of runbooks and incident response processes. I am also leading BT’s tribe- wide initiative to consolidate different observability solutions for unified standards and cost saving opportunities. Initially hired on 3 month basis, received multiple extensions.

A sole DevOps on a data engineering team responsible for full AWS multi-account and resource management. I implemented full monitoring and observability solution (Prometheus, AlertManager, Grafana, Pagerduty and ServiceNow). I set up team's SLAs, incident response and disaster recovery processes to significantly improve reliability of tools developed by the team. I also architected logging solution (ELK), implemented and improved CI/CD, adopted numerous cost saving practices and a number of ETL services (DMS, EMR, Airflow, S3 replication pipelines). I significantly improved networking and architecture of majority of services to adhere to best standards and AWS's six pillars.

An AWS go-to person and multi-account manager through AWS Organizations. I kickstarted MOO's Cost Optimisation initiative, conducting a full analysis of AWS spendings and identifying wide range of cost saving opportunities. As a result I started implementing a number of cost saving automated solutions and practices with projected savings of over 30% of the annual bill. I was involved in a variety of tasks using a wide range of technologies such as Kubernetes, AWS, Vault, Terraform, Ansible, Kustomize and GitOps. I migrated Jira/Confluence from on premise to AWS. I founded the MOO AWS Guild, co-led Chaos Engineering initiative and co-funded MOO DevOps group.
