The project relied heavily on CFD methods amongst other disciplines, which included; Process modelling using ESI ProCAST to model process parameters specific to casting setup; such as thermal profile of component, internal residual stresses and microstructure evolution. Development of CFD models from first principles to solve conjugate heat transfer (CHT) problems using Ansys CFX. Experimental design and implementation in order to validate computer models. Experience of solid modelling using Unigraphics NX and mesh generation using Ansys ICEM. Experience of metallographic sample preparation such as sample grinding, polishing and etching to reveal microstructure. Microstructure analysis of alloy components using optical microscopy and electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) to assess crystal orientation. Characterisation of the thermal properties of materials using techniques such as Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC).
